Yogacharya BKS Iyengar first visited Australia in 1983 his visit generating great interest in his method and teaching. In 1985 he certified thirteen Australian teachers at Intermediate Junior 3, a standard to train teachers. In 1987, with his blessing, the first assessment was held in Sydney, 12 teachers receiving their Introductory 2 certificates. Today there are over 180 certified teachers in Australia.
The Teachers Certification Handbook gives comprehensive information regarding teacher training, assessment and certification. A copy of the handbook can be obtained at a cost of $16.50 for members and $60.50 (including postage) for the general public. Guruji, Yogacharya BKS Iyengar, has given permission to certified teachers to use the name "Iyengar", which has been registered in Australia as a trade mark. Therefore any person who is not a certified Iyengar teacher and uses the name "Iyengar" in their advertising, including expressions such as "Iyengar style" yoga or "in the Iyengar Yoga tradition", etc. is infringing upon Guruji's rights and is contravening the Trade Marks Act. |
